Subject: Post Doc opportunity at AVO

Geophysical Institute - University of Alaska
__X___ EXTERNAL RECRUITMENT - This position vacancy is open to all interest=
ed applicants.

Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow
PCN: 924027
Department: Seismology & Volcanology
Location: Fairbanks, Alaska
Salary: DOE
Closing Date: Open Until Filled
Review of Applications Begins August 1, 2000

Analyses of seismic data from 21 volcanoes in Alaska and the Aleutians;
development of automated data analyses and monitoring schemes using
networked Sun computers and the world wide web; analyses of data from
broadband seismometers and pressure sensors; research on physical processes
causing volcano seismic events before and during volcanic eruptions.

The position is in the Seismology Group at the Geophysical Institute and is
associated with the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). AVO is a cooperative
project of the USGS, UAF/GI, and ADGGS (Alaska Division of Geological and
Geophysical Surveys) and is part of the US Geological Survey's Volcano
Hazards Program. AVO includes an extensive seismic monitoring network and
broad-based interdisciplinary geological and geophysical research teams.
AVO currently monitors 21 volcanoes of the Aleutian Arc, as well as
providing general surveillance of the north Pacific region. The seismology
group operates over 240 short-period seismic stations throughout Alaska and
the Aleutians, and 10 broadband stations with additional stations planned.
Remote Sensing facilities at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF)
include receiving stations, image/GIS analysis laboratories, use of a
Supercomputer and data archives. AVHRR, TOMS, SAR, and National
Meteorological Center (NMC) data are received at the Geophysical Institute.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is seeking an applicant to participate
in research involving the detection and monitoring of volcanic eruptions
using seismic data together with other geophysical data. Monitoring
research may include spectral analyses and determination of near-real-time
ake locations and magnitudes. Physical process research may include
investigation of temporal and spatial characteristics of volcanic tremor,
explosions, and low-frequency events and their relationship to eruptions. In
addition to the field of volcano seismology, candidates should have a strong
background in relevant sciences such as Volcanology, Geology, Geodesy,
Acoustics, Geophysics or Physics, and be well versed in UNIX programming.

We anticipate the selected candidate will spend half of their time in
observatory monitoring activities and the other half pursuing related
research. The position provides exciting opportunities to combine volcano
seismology insights with geologic and other geophysical observations for the
purpose of elucidating processes of Alaskan volcanism.

* Ph.D. in Seismology or related field.

If the appointment of a Post-Doc extends beyond one year, in subsequent
years, for purposes of collective bargaining, a union will represent this
position. At that time, the successful candidate will be obligated to pay
to the union an agency fee as a condition of employment.
